Starting in Summer 2026 term, SRJC Canvas courses and information are sourced from the Banner Student Information System. Banner has some functional differences to our prior SIS system. Due to this, faculty will see some minor changes in their Canvas courses and Canvas workflows.
Below is a list of changes to keep in mind as we transition to Banner from our prior SIS.
For guidance on using Banner/Bear Cub Hub itself, visit the Bear Cub Hub/SIS site, review the Faculty FAQ, and get support for using Banner/Bear Cub Hub.
- NEW TOOL: Banner Grades Tool
New with Banner:
- There's a new tool for submitting final student grades from Canvas to Banner: Banner Grades Tool, which will appear in Course Navigation in Canvas courses.
- NOTE: As of 6/1/26, 'Banner Grades Tool' is in development and not yet available for use. This page will be updated when the tool is available.
Previous Behavior:- Before Banner, faculty used the Downloading Grades From Canvas to Your Portal guide to download final grades from their Canvas course in the Faculty Portal. This function was done in the Faculty Portal, NOT in Canvas courses. As of 6/1/26, this tool is no longer functional and cannot be used.
- CHANGE: Course Names
New with Banner:
- Instructor names no longer appear at the end of each Canvas course name.
- Example: ENGL5: Advanced Composition and Critical Thinking: Section 9999
Previous Behavior:- Instructor names previously appeared in Canvas course names.
- Example: ENGL5: Advanced Composition and Critical Thinking: Section 9999: A Teacher
- CHANGE: 'Inactive' on People page = Student Drops
New with Banner:
- With Banner, students who drop a course or are dropped by their instructor remain on the Canvas roster (People page) but with an 'Inactive' status tag next to their names.
- NOTE: Inactive students no longer have access to the Canvas course, and do not receive announcements or notifications from the course.
- Canvas information detailing 'Inactive' status tag
- With Banner, only currently enrolled students are included in the Canvas Gradebook by default. If needed, Inactive students can be viewed in the Gradebook by filtering for ‘Inactive.’
Previous Behavior:
- A dropped student was given the Canvas status of 'Concluded', and was removed from the People page. They still appeared in the course under the ‘View Prior Enrollments’ area of the People page.
- With Banner, students who drop a course or are dropped by their instructor remain on the Canvas roster (People page) but with an 'Inactive' status tag next to their names.
- CHANGE: Canvas Cross-Listing
New with Banner:
- For Summer 2026 term courses, all Canvas cross-listings must be performed upon request by Distance Education.
- To request a Canvas cross-listing for Summer 2026 courses, please submit the form Canvas: Request A Cross-Listing
Previous Behavior:
- Before Banner, faculty could cross-list sections of their own Canvas courses in the Faculty Portal, as detailed on this page.
- NOTE: A process for faculty cross-listing of Canvas courses has not yet been determined for future semesters.
