Accessible Images Consisting of Text

Description of Issue

Images containing lots of text need descriptions of the textual content. You may have seen images, called infographics that present a lot of content in a visual manner. These images can help sighted people to take in lots of content, but are a total barrier for the blind/low-vision students.

With so much content to describe, the use of alternative text on the images is not the best way to impart all that information. It is best to put a short, succinct phrase for alternative text and then add a full description either in the text of the page or document or create a separate page to link to with the description.

Example of Infographic and Solution

See the infographic "Disability Impacts All of Us" on the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) site. Notice that under the graphic there is a link to an alternative format, a PDF, and also the full description text is placed in the page.
